Happy Mother’s Day

Happy mother’s day to all the moms out there!

Being a mom is not easy.

Happy mother’s day to you, working mom. Balancing the tasks and emotions of your job and your family is difficult.
Happy mother’s day to you, stay-at-home mom. Maintaining your individuality and creativity day after mostly-mundane-day is difficult.
Happy mother’s day to you, single mom. Managing all the different aspects of your life while being mother and father to your child is very difficult.
Happy mother’s day to you, expectant mom. Adding a helpless, dependent child to your family, whether for the first or fifth time, is difficult.
Happy mother’s day to you, wishing-I-were-a-mom mom. Experiencing the longing and pain of childlessness, especially on this Sunday in May, is difficult.
Happy mother’s day to you, empty nester mom. Transitioning to being the parent of an adult, whether newly out of the nest or long gone, is difficult.

But being a mom also brings great joy.

Happy mother’s day to you, working mom. Coming home to your beautiful family after a productive day at work is joyous.
Happy mother’s day to you, stay-at-home mom. . Having the opportunity to experience your child’s precious moments every day is joyous.
Happy mother’s day to you, single mom.  Watching your child grow into a wonderful young adult and knowing you were the primary reason for that is joyous.
Happy mother’s day to you, expectant mom. Meeting this brand new life and welcoming him/her into your family is joyous.
Happy mother’s day to you, wishing-I-were-a-mom mom.  Learning contentment in your situation and finding alternate ways of mothering is joyous.
Happy mother’s day to you, empty nester mom. Relating to your child as an intellectual and emotional equal is joyous.

Being a woman is complicated, and being a mother, even more so. Balancing our dreams and our reality can be tricky, and compromise feels all too familiar. My wish for you momma, on this Mother’s Day, is that you are able to see the beauty in your circumstance, and that you get to spend the day with someone who loves you dearly.
